Dead Basement Dehumidifier = Great Laser chiller

Might have been mentioned here before, but just thought of it. My old Dehumidifier died (compressor or low freon). Cheaper to buy new unit than have old unit repaired. Since these systems work by having a good fan that blows across the cold coils, I can simply cut the copper line, vent the freon (sorry mother earth), and run the water through the coil while keeping the case and fan assembly.

For those of you without a dead unit, you can pick up used units from Craigslist in your city for ~$25. Since these units are generally boxes on wheels, you can rip out the old compressor and mount your liquid pump and everything right inside, then simply have two hose connections running to your laser.

You can also use frige compressor (like the one in dehumidifier) as vacuum pump or "silent" low duty compressor (perfect to inflate a ball). Add oil from time to time and avoid super long runs without good ventilation and it will last a long time...
