Help with laser tube, glasses and power source

Postby kenho » Mon Sep 24, 2012 5:48 pm

Finished with the mechatronics, electronics and build - built a few cnc's in the past so just missing the parts I am unfamiliar with: the laser tube, laser power supply and goggles.

I've assembled parts I think work based on reading forum info and the BOM sources:

http://www.certified-laser-eyewear.com/ ... es-modern/

http://www.lightobject.com/40W-PWM-CO2- ... y-P71.aspx

Being that I've never worked with these before and that they are signifcant cost, I was hoping someone who's done this before could check my thinking. A couple of things I'm not clear on, even after looking through posts. First, are glasses designed "for CO2 lasers" always the same? Some people are claiming basic plastic goggles work? I just want the confidence to know the glasses I'm buying are going to keep my eyes working! Another thing that caught my attention was that the laser tube triggering voltage is 20 and opertaing is 15. The power source is triggering at 25 and operating at 20. Is this the maximum it can deliver or what it delivers standard - meaning too much for this tube? Not interested in blowing up a $300 investment.

I appreciate any help or insight!

Any plastic goggles will work fine. They are all optically opaque at this wavelength.

The voltage does not matter so much since these are current limited power supplies. No matter what you do you will have to made adjustments in software to set the max current for your tube.
