Diodes are terrible for this kind of work, the beam from normal bar diodes is not useful. The output out of modules like the Coherent FAP modules is pretty good but then you have an issue with the wavelength. These diodes typically have their wavelength centered around 808nm. It is great for pumping crystals. Not so great for cutting.

Then there is the power supply, you need a VERY clean constant current power source. No spikes at turn on or off. You look at them wrong and you will kill the diodes. Plus they are incredibly static sensitive.

And then there is cooling. Most of the time they use peltier coolers to regulate the temp. You will probably need a chiller as these like to run in the 20-25C temp range.

Also there is safety. These things would need to be in a light sealed box. CO2 lasers are relatively safe, most glasses and plastics stop it 100% so normal safety glasses are all you needs. And even without safety glasses the long wavelength of a CO2 cannot penetrate your eye so it cant damage your retina. Diodes on the other hand need special googles and if a machine was built around it it needs to be light tight. Specular reflections can cause eye damage.
