New Laser Build!!

Postby JackInTheBox1982 » Tue May 01, 2012 3:24 pm

Hello everyone, I would like to start a topic on a new custom designed laser system which I intend to start building this week.

I have designed the moving components in AutoCAD and have just sent some sheet metal components out to be laser cut. I will post some images
of the initial design in the next few days.

If anyone could offer any advice on sourcing good components here in the UK I would be most grateful, or if anyone has any tips on a new build i'm all ears!

Hi Jackinthebox,
I am from the UK as well (it seems like we are a minority in this laser cutter business!! just about everything has to be shipped from America, which is quite expensive) I am also interested in building a laser cutter, however i am currently in the 'thinking about it' stage so have not committed myself to anything yet. I am currently trying to get a list of potential suppliers like you and have so far not done particularly well. There is a few European suppliers like http://www.misumi-ec.com/ http://uk.mouser.com/ http://www.rs-online.com/index.html http://www.cncoletech.com/ I know this is like collaborating with the enemy, but have you had a look at Lasersaur http://labs.nortd.com/lasersaur/ there build is pretty much identical and the great bit for us is its European (Norwegian) so all their suppliers will ship to the UK without blowing the bank. Anyway, I hope to see some pictures of your build (and your AutoCAD designs if at all possible) and I wish you the best of luck.
Regards
Baz

Hiya Baz, thanks for your interest! Images attatched:

I have ordered some of the sheet metal work, which should hopefully be cut and bent today, so then I can start assembly.

I have sourced some linear components from a company called euro bearings, but for 3 V-wheel bearings and 2000mm of track I am looking at about £130! which seems a crazy price for such a small amount of material.

Has anyone managed to source these components more competitively?

Thanks,

Tim.

I am unable to bring up your images, might need to edit the post and re-insert them.
