So MINTEMP gets polled only when turning the heater on.
That's a bit... useless.

First Print Worked

Postby bdring » Thu Dec 13, 2012 12:35 am

I just did my first print using Repetier Host and Firmware. I switched the Z to a normally open setup and it works now.

I only printed a test cube, but it looks pretty good. I'll post some pictures soon, but I am out of time for a bit. It will be at tomorrows PS:One Meeting.

Having the z end stop switch at normally closed setting is safer than at normally open. If one of the wires to the switch breaks, then most firmware will not allow you to move the motor towards the endstop since an open means that the endstop has been reached. With normally open, the firmware would still move the axis toward endstop and since it will never close, it could result in a crash. This is dangerous when homing the z.

It is much safer to configure it so it actually works.

Otherwise, there is serious risk of damage via sledgehammer. In my experience a sledgehammer successfully stops all movement.

Sledgehammer! Well, yes. Sure. Whatever you say. :)

Hard to argue with a sledgehammer.

I know all about best practices for interlock loops. In this case, I just needed to move forward and get past this simple glitch. I setup my machine so the Y home puts the nozzle in front of the printing bed. When Z homes during a G28 home all, there is nothing for the tip to crash into. If the limit switch does not electrically stop the Z, it will physically stop it by stalling the motors.

I was printing for over an hour last night without any extruder problems. I did have one failed print. I left the machine running for about 1/2 half hour to pick up my son at his band rehearsal. When I can home I touched the USB cable and it caused the Arduino to restart. I don't know if it was static or a loose cable. It has also happened a few times when I touched the printer. Could it be related to my HDPE mount. It could build static.

Were you printing from and sdcard or directly from the host?

I was printing from the host, but I don't think it would have made a difference. The Azteeg X3 needs the USB for to power the Arduino. I am sure there is a way around it, but I have not looked into it.

I really like the Repetier host. I have been very temped to play with the speed and flow multipiers. I don't want to introduce too many variables right now.
