Blah_59's Cerberus

Postby blah_59 » Sun Aug 25, 2013 8:14 pm

Just starting to build my Cerberus, designed by Steve Graber. I have almost all the plastic parts printed (I thought I had them all but found I want to redesign a couple of things before the build instead of after like normal).

I've temporarily assembled the main frame. I'm going to paint the aluminum flat black later, to go with the motif.

Then I have to get the rest of these parts assembled and duct taped on somehow :) :

Here are the assembled carriages, minus the connector piece for the rods. I probably should have gone a little more solid on the carriages (used 30%) but they feel solid enough to work. I've printed the connector pieces for the Traxxas ball ends but I think I'm going to skip them and go straight to magnets and steel ball bearings, so a little more printing to do...

Steve's out of the drive reels for the spectra fishing line drive system and his machinist has been out of town. So in the mean time, I wanted to come up with something to get me going in case I finish the build before he has more reels available. I picked up some 5/8" threaded rod from the hardware store and with some cutting, drilling, and tapping, here is what I came up with:

Looking great! What's the largest size part you had to print?

Are you going to use the airtripper extruder?

The biggest parts are the bottom braces with motor mounts, coming in about 220mm in length. It fit on my Hadron but I needed to rotate it to make it fit, lined up corner to corner. You need 3 of them and they snap together brilliantly.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about the extruder. I'm going to try the direct drive Bowden extruders designed for the Cerberus. After I printed them, they look like a modified version of Bart's extruder. I'll try to post pictures when I get home.

Here are the two extruders, one put together (minus cutting off the excess length on the M3 acting as the lever) and one with just the extruder body on the motor.

Ok, I've been working on a lot of the necessary but not funnest parts of the build.

Here are the home made drive reels mounted to the base:

These are the magnetic rod ends that will attach to the effector plate:

Here are the carriages with the swivels attached with Spectra line:

Here is a blurry shot of the pullies that go at the base of each vertical extrusion:

Here is the dual mount for the Chess hot ends I'm going to try in this thing:

And here is the effector plate in mid-print that the steel balls will be mounted to for the magnetic arm rods:

Do you have a link to some info on those magnetic rod ends? They look pretty cool.

Here's a link to the original forum post about the rod ends:

Here's a link to the original Rod Ends, the effector plate and the steel ball carriage plate:

And here is the link to an adapter for smaller diameter rods (I modified this one to fit my rods which are different than both Xnaron's and Jamesarm97's):

Thanks, that's a fantastic approach. I think I'll try and turn some out of acetal on the lathe.

Ok, made some more progess...

Here is some 4-wire coming out of the top/rear of the printer for the extruder motors:

100_2332.JPG

Here are the same wires coming out the bottom where I'll mount the Azteeg X3:

100_2333.JPG

The wiring for the X, Y, and Z stepper motors:

100_2334.JPG

Here is a mount I designed and printed to hold the extruders straight up and down above the printer, I figure I'll design a spool holder similar to the one I did for my Hadron:

And here is the current state of the printer:
