Ord Bot "Tweak"

Postby Grebbo » Sun Jan 19, 2014 11:52 pm

Hi all,

New to this form and wanted to share my build..
I have been messing around with CNC machines for the last 5 years and decided to look at the 3D printer build.
After a long research on the internet of what people are doing and building I decided to go with the Ord Bot platform and pretty much as soon as I put it together I decided to “tweak” it a bit :)
I have fabricated all non standard parts on my CNC and the mechanical upgrade is almost complete
The upgrade so far includes:
• Fully supported anti backlash ball screws,
• HIWIN linear guides to all axis,
• Micron all metal extruder,
The “Y” axis will hopefully be finished this week, also the height volume will increase to some 250mm but will check that once all finished,

Anti-backlash on the Z? Doesn't gravity do that for free?

I'm curious how your prints come out with the ball screws. I'm getting some Z banding with mine and amd looking at solutions.

You can still have backlash or lash on a gantry to a smaller degree, my issue was that the threaded rods that come with the “Kit” were somewhat hard to get to operate smoothly, I was getting a lot of wobble (one of my rods had a noticeable bow to it and the other kept on sticking in various areas on the length of the rod) Ball screws are far superior to the threaded rod or Acme and are far more efficient in transfer of rotational force to motion. I had a good supplier from when I built the CNC machine and was able to get custom length 12mm ball screws as a good price.
Basically I’m hoping for a smooth, non jerky motion which hopefully yield more accurate printing.

Interesting upgrade. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of this.

I wondered if anyone would notice :)
I'm playing around with a design for a water jacket for the J-head, work in progress but I will share once I start focusing on it a bit more,
