Mikie's 1987 Millport Knee Mill CNC retrofit

Postby bloomingtonmike » Thu Oct 31, 2013 4:14 am

Here is my latest machine.

I wanted to retrofit a CNC Mill for steel and stainless work. I already have a 62X52X8 spindled router CNC machine for wood and plastic.

I found an $1800 Millport Knee Mill from 1987 that had a suspected bad Dynapath Delta 20 controller.

Here are some specs on the machine:
1987 Millport 1630 Rhino I 4500lb knee mill
3hp 3ph chromed spindle
Nema42 29-inch/lb Servos
Heidenhain 4000ppr encoders
5tpi hardened precision 1" ballscrews
Way covers and ball screw covers
Auto lubrication of ways
Auto flood coolant setup
30"X, 15"Y, and 5.5"Z travel and the knee is 17" travel.
Table is 10"X50" and a 800lb load capacity
Vise is a 75lb 6" Kurt D688 with 8.8" opening
Machine uses #30 tooling (BT30, NMTB30, Cat30)

Here are some current pictures AFTER my retrofit:

Here are a couple videos/walkarounds from youtube.

I never did get a working output on the original controller/display and I did NOT try to hard to make it work. It will go up for sale on ebay.

I gutted the controller cabinet and monitor cabinet.

I kept the transformers, rectifier, cap, and reused some of the wiring.

I purchased an $1800 AjaxCNC AllinOneDC Servo motor controller, the centroid software, and the Centroid Pendant.

Also purchased a 3hp 2.2kw Hitachi WJ200 VFD, the remote readout for the VFD, some 24vdc contactors, a 24vdc power supply, 2X1 wire trough, DIN rail, terminal blocks, and some more wire.

I also need a Windows 7 or 8 PC so I built a Gigabyte Brix (4"X4"X1" computer) with an I3-3227u chip, 16GB of mem, and a 128GB SSD drive. Loaded it up with Windows 8. Also bought a 15" kiosk style touchscreen monitor. On the way is a ip68 waterproof keyboard with mouse.

I installed everything over the course of 3 weeks. Super sweet.

Learning the centroid software now.
