Flame Polishing

FYI: Lately I have been using my router more for making the parts kits. I don't like running the laser for big production jobs. My exhaust blower is a bit loud, and points right at the neighbors house. The smell is not really noticeable because the air volume is so high, but I don't want to wear out my welcome. The smaller parts are still lasered, because the router like to launch them across the room.

The only difference is the edge quality. The laser has a nice polished edge with some vertical lines. The router has a smooth, but dusty looking edge. On my laser I just left the routed edges alone, but I recently discovered flame polishing. There are many YouTube videos (search "flame polish"). Below is a short one.

I use a simple propane torch and it works fine. It looks like some people use more exotic torches. It is easy to do, just don't overheat the part. You probably won't hurt anything, but the edge does not look as good.

I also flamed the edge on all the HDPE tube mounting brackets. It is more sensitive and browns if overheated. The results are not perfect, but definitely better than the raw cut.

(i know this is old)

Have you tried adding holding tabs so that the router doesn't launch them?

If you email your DXF, bit dimensions, desired speeds (ipm and rpms) and how much you want to take at a pass, I will gen up some gcode with holding tabs and send it your way. I added 2mm x 2mm holding tabs on mine and it worked perfectly... minimal filing needed.

Good question because "Blomker Industries is based in Malaysia. " I wonder why he posted without that little tidbit of information?? 8-)

The parts look very nice and are finished nicely (according to photos).

For those ok with mill finished plates, pm me. Save ~20 bucks and get the z axis plates. Made in the USA and shipped from here too.

As always Bart is sent a royalty on my sales.
