RA 3D Printer Controller - Kickstarter

3D printer controller on kickstarter.

These guys tried to pack everything they could onto a single board.

Seems a bit overkill to me, think I'll wait for the Orduino. $60 for internationally shipping a circuit board seems a bit excessive too!

Always good to see more boards out there though. :)

I like the screw terminals. I'm not sure if they were screw terminals with removable terminal blocks, but that would be even better. I might have a good use for a second heated bed, but I'm not sure many people would, and I can fairly easily make do without it with a little bit of added off-board circuitry. I don't think I need the MP3 player to tell me the printing is finished. I think I can hear that the printing is finished. That feature is a solution looking for a problem IMO. And the disco lighting effects? I don't know what that is, but I'm sure I don't need it.
Apparently, I didn't build that! :-)

Looks like there is a lot on the board:

Uses standard PC ATX power supply - very nice
6 x stepper driver controllers = 3axis Z has 2 motor outputs + 3extruder
3 x 12V 10A MOSFET extruder heater controllers
2 x 12V 10A MOSFET heated bed controllers (good for the 200 x 400 bed machine I am designing)

Zooming in on the photo of the board it looks like all the screw terminals are in a single strip, not the pluggable type.

The LCD display with rotary + push encoder and SD card are an extra cost item, and to get to that level assembled is $290 with possible delivery in November, 4 months after the funding closes.

I like the look of the project. Seems to have everything you could need in a controller. I especially like the idea of having standalone (no PC) operation. And the RGB LED status indication is a nice touch. If I only had money...

So, basically, the only new features compared to RAMPS and other currently available boards are:

- an extra extruder channel (unneeded by 99% of users and unfeasible for 99% of printer designs)
- an extra bed output (huh?)
- fancy lights

Count me non-enthused (as much as i like fancy lights).

add to that a funding model for international postage that makes ebay sellers seem generous, $60 postage for a pcb and a few little extras, the qu-bd extruder complete with stepper motor is only $7 additional for internationals.

I'll stick with an Azteeg or an Orduino
