XYZ printer from Amazon $499

Postby Turbo442 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 4:56 am

XYZ printer from Amazon $499, thought I would give it a try. 51 lb box, free two day shipping with prime.

Heated bed, auto leveling, nozzle wiper, filament cartridge, fully enclosed.

Pretty amazed so far. No extruder jams, just goes and goes. Appears to have an original extruder design, geared, has a fan on it.

Seems like the usual inkjet printer marketing tactic of selling you an inexpensive or loss leading item in order to bleed you in costs on ink. If there's a workaround for the cartridges, I may actually go for one of these to add to my shop until I can afford a UV resin printer. Would be interested to know more about your experiences with it, it's software functionality, etc.

So far the printer is working well. No jams, just send the file over and it prints. I have sent over a couple 5 hour prints with no issues. No stringing, no knocking parts over. As far as the cartridges go, I think people are making a bigger deal of it than it really is. You pay $30 for one kg plus shipping on average or 28 free shipping from Amazon for 600g. Plus I don't have to deal with a tangled mess which honestly accounts for 50% of my printing failures. I could drop in my own arduino ramps boards but don't really feel the need at this point.

Prints look a bit rough / wobbly.
Is it belt driven?

Edit: also, there seems to be some serous underextrusion going on there - the top surfaces are full of holes.

My main concern is what happens with this thing if the company goes belly up or decides they're not selling enough to justify continuing and you can't get filament for it? Also, as it's a Chinese company selling something for a cost far less than anything else in the market space, where are the weak points in this thing? It seems you're past the first major hurdle of it actually working correctly right out of the box.

And, as Orcinus has asked about print quality, are there settings for being able to improve on stuff like this, or is it the large version of the epoxy blob?

Printer is belt driven. I think I may try slowing the printer down a bit. I think that may help the print quality.

I need to play with the software some more.

I will see what I can do tomorrow.

I believe the company is from Taiwan not that it matters that much. If the company goes belly up I can always throw in the old ramps 1.4 and Arduino combo. So far though I don't see the need.

Interesting post today on Hackaday about this printer. Worth a read through and the comments as well. You get a bit more of an idea about the internals of this thing and it's possibilities.
