Geckos are petty nice, but they really have not changed in a long time. I have had a few quality issues with them too. Gecko is good about fixing the problems...but still. They also lock you into certain step sizes, which can be a problem. The all in one G540 is handy, but not cheap. I am using a 3 year old one on my plasma cutter.

The regular and the DSP drivers that Keling and other sell are pretty good. The DSPs run cool and the motors run cool and and quiet. The motors are quiet in hold mode, but they also run quieter when running and run with less resonance. I have heard some people say that this can cause less whip on long lead screws. I have not seen or tested that claim.

I would love to test that on my big router. The Gecko 230V driven stepper is almost louder than the spindle during rapids and my top end speed is limited about 150 ipm before whip starts. I use a 5/8 ball screw.

I'm getting sort of confused now. I have the LO DSP and the LO 4 axis board, which doesn't seem to work (as also noted above). If I get 3 KL-4030s, I can connect them directly to the DSP, right? I thought I read that somebody did this, but it doesn't seem to be a standard option.

Thanks!

I have run my laser with 3 KL-xxxx drivers. I think the DSP was designed to use those. The "high-end" complete Chinese lasers typically use that type of setup.

If you look in the DSP manual it usually, shows that wiring. I don't have the PDF with me right now.

I made a copy back in August. Here it is. Download this to your PC, unzip, and open the resulting HTML file.

I'd like to note that between http://www.boltdepot.com and http://www.fastenal.com, you can order pretty much all the bits you'd get from McMaster-Carr. In some cases, it makes the most sense to buy from McMaster, otherwise, Boltdepot is cheaper if both it and fastenal have the same part. You can get all the annoying nylon spacers from Fastenal. According to my spreadsheet, without shipping, this reduces the 'McMaster Car BOM' from about $280 to about $86.

I should note I zeroed out the 5mmx10mmx1mm shims; these seem to be for the v-wheel/idler bearings, but now that we're buying those as a kit they come with, don't they? Also, in some cases, such as the spacers, the exact dimensions weren't available, so I generally chose the closest fit. In any case the difference is in the .02-.04" range.

Grr. I wish there was an easy way to embed that list here. Here's it in CSV format:

edit: Just realized I used the old BOM and not the new one listed here, so it is probably possible to save another few dollars eliminating depricated parts.

Glad to be of service.

Please do verify that of the substitutions I made from boltdepot and fastenal. I made this up on a bleary, sleepless night, and while I -think- any differences in the parts (different finish on some of the washers, slightly larger ID on some of the spacers) won't matter, I make no guarantee that I didn't get something terribly wrong. ;)

I'll probably revisit this sometime in the next couple of weeks as I get ready to make my own order, and I'll post an updated sheet when I have it.

Re: "New kit" BOM with sources

Postby ag3c » Mon Mar 11, 2013 5:13 am

Hey folks,
I nabbed a kit from the recent 2.x batch and I'm slowly accumulating parts to assemble my laser. Question: this BOM suggests LightObject part LSR-JLD40WCO2, which is 850mm, but the Sources For Laser Parts wiki page says: "...You can use other power tubes as long as they fit (about 750mm max.) in the enclosure and the diameter does not exceed the size of the tube clamps (53mm max.)"

Does the 850mm LSR-JLD40WCO2 fit? Would a 1000mm tube fit? What's the real max length?

Thanks!
