Sources for mechanical endstops?

Postby mxk » Sat Mar 31, 2012 5:51 pm

I got my Quantum yesterday and began assembling it this morning. I'm almost done with the gantry (this goes together SOOO nicely, good job on the wiki, everyone please be sure to look at every drawing before you begin), and realized I cannot use my opto-endstops as I had assumed.

What is a good source for the roller-type microswitches? I usually buy stuff like that from Ultimachine but they are out of stock.

My local radioshack stocks switches that work for endstops. Since you only need 3 the higher cost isn't that big of a deal, and it's very handy when you break one, like I did this afternoon...

If you don't need a roller, then maybe these will do:

I just ordered a bag to use as contact whisker switches for robotics. For $0.35 each it's no biggie if I break a few.

Pololu has some with the roller:
http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1404 <- Currently out of stock 4/4/12

They have 5 types of switches at http://www.pololu.com/catalog/category/7
These are micro switch type's with body dimension of 20.0 x 6.4 x 10.2 mm, and 2 in line mounting holes on 9.5mm centers
as depicted in http://www.buildlog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1035&p=8247&hilit=endstop#p8240 so I think they will work.

They also have The A4988 stepper motor driver carrier in stock as well:

Endstop question

Postby WhiteB0rd » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:56 pm

SO, the RAMPS and derivatives support endstops, and there is wiring for 3 circuits, X-Y-Z.

Do folks wire one per axis or two (max and min)?

If only one, where? Max Min on Z, left vs right on X, etc?

I only use the min so I can home consistently to the same place. For the max values I use software limiting. As you face the printer from the front the min X is on your left, the min Y is closest to you, and Z of course is on the build plate itself.

BTW, I was surprised to find that my local Radio Shack did have roller microswitches. Not a great selection, and the prices were about 3x what I paid at Allelectronics, but in stock. They even had the Arduino Mega2560! Still mostly phones, batteries, and R/C toys, but it looks like they are at least making some attempt to attract the maker community.
