Helios Bed Glass Holder

Postby blah_59 » Wed Jan 02, 2013 3:51 am

Happy New Year everyone. I made a glass holder for my Helios heated bed from our friend Roy at Panucatt and thought I would share it in case it could help anyone out. I wanted to get rid of the office clips that were taking space away from the build area and frankly don't look cool 8-) and I wanted to get rid of my springs, so this is what I came up with...

How thick is the glass intended to be?

Mine is 8 1/2 inch square, 1/4 inch thick with sanded edges. The parts could easily be modified for thinner/thicker glass though.

Anyone using 1/8" (3 mm) glass with the Helios? I've had a couple break on me. I suspect that the board is too thick for 1/8" glass and puts too much stress on the glass when it warps a little when heated. I've been using the Prusa Mk1 before and I never had this problem presumable since the board is much thinner.

Has anyone come up with a solution on how to mount 1/8" glass on the Helios without breaking?

@Brnrd,

Do you have over sized glass, meaning up to the edge of the board? I am thinking that the temp difference between the center and outer edges of the glass causes it to crack, the clips will actually make it worse since it is now holding a much thicker material compared to the Prusa bed( more pinching force). Maybe these clips from blah_59 would help.

They were bigger in one dimension than the Helios: 230 mm x 210 mm. They were the same ones that I used with the Prusa Mk1 without a problem. I used 3/8" capacity bulldog clamps to mount them on the Helios near the four corners. I can see the center of the Helios bowing upwards within a minute of turning the heat on so it's probably enough to cause the glass to crack. I don't think the temperature gradient is the cause since the Mk1 has a similar gradient. I'm afraid that this thin glass would break if fixed to the Helios on the corners.
