New carriage plate for extruder mount

Postby fma » Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:01 am

Hi,

I'm working on a simple extruder and GRRF hotend mount, and I think I will design a new carriage plate. I attached a picture of what I have in mind.

As you can see, I made a lot of holes in the plate, to help mounting things (I need to redesign my air cooling system).

My main concern is about the heat: the ABS I'm using need a high temperature (~255°C), which can melt the hotend support... I made a test with a design close to this one, and the ABS didn't resist to that high temp. I think this is mostly because of heat generated by convexion, as the big nut is also at a high temp.

So I'm looking for a thermal barrier I can glue below the hotend mount. Any suggestion for that?

I'm also waiting feedback to this complete extruder design...

Thanks!

PS: I already use the extruder part, and so far, it works fine. As you can see, I don't use any spring.

Try some Aerogel or Pyrogel - either would work.

A thermal barrier can also be "cool air". I'm using a Hot End Spacer for my MakerGear Extruder in order to be able to cool the hot end's upper part. This way the fan cools also the Extruder.

I would like to avoid additional fan...

Any idea where I can find aerogel or pyrogel, in thin sheet?

Another question: did you consider to use a "bowden extruder"?
I'm thinking about such a solution considering that my next 3D-Printer will probably be based on a Delta Design like DeltaMaker:

Yes, I have Bowden in mind! But my experience with 3mm filament was not that good, so I prefer to design a solution which can embedd the extruder, so I will be able to switch between solutions...

But in both cases, the hotend mount has that heat problem.

I found some ceramic tape, used for exhausts:

Do you know where I can some, but self-sealing?

... a ceramic thermal insulator may be the solution:

I think I will have this part printed in stainless steel or alumide, by Shapeways, as I also need to print a new heater block, in stainless steel...
