Problem with Smart LCD Controller

Postby tmccafferty » Tue Jun 25, 2013 3:02 pm

I recently installed a REPRAPDISCOUNT Smart LCD Controller on my ordbot. I did the recommended changes in Marlin and everything initially seemed fine and all functions worked. However, after it's on a while, the display starts displaying garbage. I have a friend with a ordbot and the same display and he is having no problems. For troubleshooting, we swapped displays and cables. The problem still remains with my printer.
It's like something gets out of sink....

Any ideas?

Not that I have one of these but I'd be guessing electrical noise. How long is the wiring to the LCD? Is the LCD wiring run alongside any others?

Good luck 8-)

Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at it tomorrow. My cables are about 12". I don't think my routing is any different than my buddies printer, but he does have a different controller board.

Seems like if they are that sensitive, there would be lots of people with the problem.

It depends a lot on the environment too.
Some people had problems with the long stock (not longstocking) cables that came with the ViKi controller. A lot of people didn't.

You can also try reducing the I2C speed (assuming Reprapdiscount's display uses I2C).

Once it scrambles, the only way to get it back is to power down. I'll come up with a scheme to try shielding the cable.

Try a ferrite choke (bead) if you have one lying around. Not sure if it will help, but it might.
