Yeah, I sometimes envy you guys in the states, we don't have much up here, what we do have is way marked up, and I have to pay through the nose to get anything from down there. Even my favourite brewery is in the states (Southern Tier), lol

Come down here, lose your job and get sick. You'll never envy us again. ;)

Oh sorry ... off topic.

Update: ordered about half the components, gonna be ordering the bolts nuts and washers for the extruder on Tuesday, as well as a bunch of 4-pin and 2-pin molex connectors.

What should I use to hold spools of filament? I've seen stuff I can print, but again, the chicken and the egg thing. I need something to hold the spool so I can print something to hold the spool, lol. What do people usually do when starting out with a new printer?

A desktop spool holder was my first mission to print after building the Hadron. You can put the spool on your desk / bench in between a couple of books or something until getting a spool holder printed. Or you can make a temp spool holder with a couple of tall objects and a dowel or rod.

You can see how I mounted my spool here: http://buildlog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=2119 It's been working out pretty well. Before I had this setup I was just running the spool from the table and keeping an eye on it to make sure it didn't get tangled.

I uploaded the brackets here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:144247 The problem with this though is that it uses aluminum extrusions. I think there's a fully printed version somewhere that works similarly.

My spool holder doesn't use extrusions but you do need a rod or dowel across the top. I use threaded rod so I can space the spools and use bearings to reduce the friction. I noticed that with the spools rolling/spooling off the front, there was almost no friction and the spool would sometimes unwind itself like Rick mentioned. So I found that if I turn the spools around and let them roll / spool off the back and then feed the filament in to the extruder it works great and doesn't unroll itself.

I have 3 rolls of filament above my printer and it's still very sturdy, no worries of anything bad happening.

Hmmm, looks like some great options, I'll check them out! Getting excited, ordered about 3/4 of my stuff so far, trying to finalize local sources for nuts, bolts, washers, and springs, as well as 200mm sq. x 3mm thick tempered glass. Prices add up quick! But to be fair, I'll have enough wiring, connectors, bolts, nuts, washers, springs, rods, glass, heater cartridges, and kapton tape to build 5 more printers, not to mention the tools I'm getting, like the dial indicator and stripper / crimper. I'm hoping to get my extruder pieces first, I'm looking forward to building it. I have a concept for a 360 degree cooling solution for the cold end of the J-Head I think could work well, looking forward to a test print.

Hi Jeff
Iv'e been watching over your shoulder whilst you have been putting together your dream 3d printer after you talking it over with Cvoinescu and Jeff (JLG) would you mind if I joined in and made one with the same or very similar specs?
Cheers
Bazzwaldo (in Sydney, Australia)

I left the following message for Cvoinescu on the general introduction page

"Hey Cvoinescu
Thanks again for the advice
I have been following Jeff (JLG) on the "ORD BOT Hadron Help Appreciated" thread.
I am so impressed with your and Rickmellor's assistance, advice and insight I am going to take the plunge and copy the build package Jeff has put together after listening to you guys if thats OK with Jeff
Jumping over to that thread now to ask
Cheers

Yeah sure, I don't mind, it's an open source product on a public forum, even if I wanted I don't have any sort of right to stop you, lol. Here's the list I used for the extruder:

J-head hot end, 0.35mm orifice, 1.75mm filament
https://www.hotends.com/index.php?route ... duct_id=88

Mounting plate for the hotend (wasn't sure if I needed it, but read somewhere that it's good for extra heat dissipation)
https://www.hotends.com/index.php?route ... duct_id=81

This is the exact extruder I got, seems a little shady, but was more specific then all the other listings I saw
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.ca/viewitem? ... 1254286594

this is the list I found as far as what you need to assemble it
x3 608ZZ bearings
x1 M8 hobbed bolt
x1 M8 Nyloc Nut
x1 M8 Standard Nut
x4 M8 Washers
x2 M4 55mm SHCS
x2 M4 20mm SHCS
x4 M4 Standard Nut
x4 M4 Washers (originally said M3 Washers, but I figured since they are meant for M4 screws, it was a typo
Because as far as I know, and M3 washer doesn't fit on an M4 bolt, can somebody correct me if I'm wrong?)
x3 M3 10mm SHCS
x1 M3 30mm SHCS
x1 M3 StandardNut
x2 Springs
0.297 Diameter
0.049 Wire Diameter
0.669 Length
x1 M8 20mm Smooth Rod

And here's the instructions I'm going to follow.
http://www.plastibot.com/wp-content/upl ... truder.pdf
http://reprapkit.com/wiki/index.php?tit ... e_extruder

The extruder was by far the most annoying part to research, thought I'd lend a hand there. The rest is very easy if you have the ability to Google efficiently. This forum was a great help, I just needed a foothold to start with, and it was a great one!

Hi Jeff
I had the most amazing luck yesterday afternoon
Missed out on purchasing this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161091088605 ... 1438.l2649
So started my search again and found this site (in Australia): http://www.robotronics.com.au/web/
As it turns out, most of the parts in your wish list are in Dane's inventory for the kit (but getting a different ramps set which sounds as good as the Azteeg x3 3DP (recommended by Dane, can't remember what it's called but will get back on that one))
Getting a .4mm nozzle size hot end for 3mm fillament (as per Cvoinescu comment on ideal nozzle size) and staying with 12V to start with
Very Very Happy Chap am I
Can't wait to get this kit and put it together
I'll keep you posted as I make it and hopefully be able to show some product!
Cheers
