Depends on your drive mechanics. If you've got 1000 steps per inch, theoretically you're at 0.001" accuracy. Of course the laser kerf, machine vibration, power settings and other things will vary the accuracy slightly. It is entirely possible to make an adjustment to your drawing of .001" and see a difference in fit of a part. I can do the same, and I'm running a basic 40w Chinese laser.
