Z axis

Postby ettienned » Mon May 21, 2012 2:59 pm

Hi guys

I assume that the Z Axis is not needed in a laser cutter . This could be manually adjusted until the correct focal length is set.

The Z axis is needed but is not required to be motorized.
"This is not my sig", it said. - I looked at it suspiciously; Who's sig was it, then?

doesn't it sort of depend on what you're doing with the machine? If you are only using 1/8" material, could you get away with having something like this: eBay rather than a full Z axis?

That would be one of two ways to adjust your Z axis. Opposite would be to have the table/cutting surface capable of moving. Neither needs to be motorized.

Thanks .
Another question the stepper motors we can get is south africa has a Kg.cm of 4. this is less than specified so i take it that it should not matter to much as there is no resistance like a router or foam cutter

There is a lot less resistance on a laser cutter. The torque rating for the motors will affect your acceleration rate and holding force. Lower power motors, you might not be able to approach the high speeds you would need on the laser head for raster engraving.
