Stepper motor control

Postby joskerel » Mon Jul 23, 2012 10:10 am

Hey everyone,

I'm looking on the web trying to find out how important it is to buy a good stepper motor controller and now i found a shop in aussie where they sell the
MD882 Microstepping Stepper Motor Controller form lead shine technology.
They discount them from 170 for 75 and i'm wondering whether it while pay out in the end when the machine is build.
It explained that this one makes a full sinus rather then cutting and switching (Pure-sinusoidal precise current control technology) witch then is more silent.
But is therefor also more precise?
I' haven't bought anything so far but am thinking of making a workable suffice of 1200 x1200 mmm and am thinking of buying the DSP commercial controllers from LightObject
and some nema 23 stepper motors.

here are the Features
* Patented technology
* Pure-sinusoidal precise current control technology
* High performance, low cost
* Supply voltage up to +75VDC
* Peak current to 8.2A (RMS5.86A)
* Optically isolated differential input
* pulse frequency up to 300 KHz
* Automatic idle-current reduction
* Suitable for 2-phase and 4-phase stepper motors
* 16 selectable resolutions up to 10000 steps/rev
* DIP switch current setting with 8 different values
* PUL/DIR & CW/CCW mode optional
* Short-circuit, over-voltage,short-voltage protection
* Small size (115x67.7x25mm)

Cheers Hans

I have used stepper drivers from Leadshine. They actually worked quite will but are overkill for a DIY laser. They work quite well with the DSP controller because they like a logical low for pulses. They have really high resolution, but anything more than about 16th step is beyond the accuracy of the motors.

I personally think their "fully digital" drivers are better than Gecko drives.

I'm at the point where I need to figure out what to buy and I'm a little bit at a loss. Can someone explain what makes a good controller for a DSP laser?

Basically I need a primer on how to read the spec sheets and what the difference is between these, all the other controllers here - http://www.lightobject.com/Stepping-Mot ... r-C46.aspx

$29 - http://www.lightobject.com/1-Axis-CNC-L ... -P451.aspx
$39 - http://www.lightobject.com/Mini-2-Phase ... -P650.aspx
$49 - http://www.lightobject.com/2-Phase-45A- ... -P453.aspx

Thanks!
