S Curve is the acceleration and deceleration profile for the motors. Generic controllers and Mach3 use a trapezoidal linear accel and decel. S Curve has rounded transition from stop to start and to full speed and back. You get a smoother running machine and with steppers you can sometimes get a little more speed. I believe with servos you get better positional accuracy.

You have an extra parameter called "jerk". This is the change in acceleration over time. Acceleration starts slowly and ramps up. It can reduce the shakiness in a machine.

It is often used on amusement park rides. A quick acceleration can cause riders heads to snap back. This is because the riders don't have time to set their neck muscles to resist the acceleration. If the acceleration comes on slower, the riders can better prepare for it.

Up until April, there was always three versions of any new firmware update,

viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1128

The last two updates, including the one mentioned in this thread, have been only one version. V7

Does this mean that these latest updates are only applicable to V7 controllers,

or does the one update now cover all of V6, V7 and V8 ?

I'm always a bit wary of upgrading a stable working system - is there any info on what the upgrade actually improves? There doesn't seem to be any readme files along with it.

One of my pet hates is that it will overwrite my edited english language file - it also never says if the new file has been changed to include extra items - I have to painfully go through the 'chinglish' file to see if the line numbers match

Cheers

Chinese competition seems to be worst than ever!
Already contacted Marco and sent him my order number, I hope to get the software soon.
Thanks for you help, as always you are very kind.
