I don't have a thermocouple, but I have a small infrared thermometer that I can use to measure the temperature of the nozzle. It's probably less accurate than the thermistor, but they do seem to agree to within about 5°C. The nozzle is the very stubby J-Head design, so there should be almost no difference in temperature between the bottom face and the inside of the hot end.

I'm interested in the IR thermometer that you have. The one I have has a large focus area and so it's inappropriate for measuring hotend temperature.

Thanks.

Mine has a wide field of view too (45°), but I can always lift the hot end all the way up and measure from below, 2-3mm under the nozzle (almost touching).

switch to a 3ohm resistor was a good idea!

but now i have a new problem...

this is supposed to be a cube

I'm not sure if that method would be accurate on my IR thermometer. The hole on mine is around 23 mm in diameter which is larger than the j-head's cross section.

I don't think this is a good idea. That's too much power to heat the nozzle with 12V and you're likely to damage everything when your nozzle goes way over 300C and you may even start a fire.

As far as the problem with your prints, it looks like one of your axes is either missing steps or the gear is slipping in the motor shaft.

You're right. Mine is only about 3-4 mm.
