New SeeMeCNC Extruder

General discussion of 3D printers

Re: New SeeMeCNC Extruder

Postby hansk1990 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 12:48 am

Hey guys,
I'm only new to the whole 3D printer scene and am intending on building a Ord Bot Hadron and hence looking for a nice, reliable extruder. This SeeMeCNC extruder looks really great, but I'm interested to know what everyone thinks of it? Is this one of the better extruders (cost vs reliability)? I've looked into the higher end extruders like the Makerbot type extruders but $200 kinda overruns my meagre student cash availability and hence I'm hoping this might make for a reasonable substitute!
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Mount by Wood Block on Stock Extruder Carriage

Postby flickerfly » Thu Jun 13, 2013 1:09 am

Making a super basic, temp mount out of wood for the current carriage was actually really easy. I just needed a 2x4 (or maybe I used a 2x6 scrap, cut down) and 4 wood screws. The rest came in the EZStruder kit. I was even able te use the screws meant mount it on the RostockMax.Beside being basically a block of wood, I used the table saw to cut a groove in it for the j-head barrel. So far, I haven't seen the j-head get too hot from being 1/3 surrounded by an insulator like that, but maybe that would become an issue on long prints. Anyone have further thoughts on that?

Yep, It's good.

hansk1990, so far, my experience has been nothing but peachy. Being a newb myself I've told it to try to extrude into a cold hotend and it just ground away leaving bits of plastic around. As soon as I told it to pop the plastic out, it did so willingly. Loading filament has been a breeze. Just hold down the lever and insert into hole, it just slides into place. Extruding by hand means just holding down the lever and pushing. Disassembly/assembly is trivial. mounting it has been no problem. I'm using the J-head and that just popped right in like in the videos.

The only thing so far that I can complain about (and I have to search to find this) is that it'd be nice if I didn't have to remove the entire hotend holder from the motor to swap out another hotend. That's six (count em SIX) screws. Who has time for that. :roll: (<--That's sarcasm.) You can also check out the SeeMeCNC forums. They are pretty active and I'm sure have more talk about it there.

All that said, I haven't done any multi-hour prints with it yet which is, as I understand it, where the QU-BD was a problem, but that was related to the hot-end and this doesn't come with the hotend. Get the j-head and you'll be good for ABS and PLA. (If you buy the parts from https://hotends.com, he'll assemble it for you and ship it. Not having the full thing on hand is just how he manages his time I guess.)

I'm just starting to calibrate my extruder, however I'm having issues getting it's feed rate correct and some slipping/grinding is happening. I'm using the SeeMeCNC EzStruder with 1.75mm filament going through a Ubis .40mm hotend (http://printrbot.com/shop/ubis-hot-end/). I flashed my RAMPS 1.4 with Marlin firmware and I'm printing in RepHost. The extruder seems like it's going through the filament very quickly and too much PLA is coming out the hot-end making the prints quite bulbous, also there is some slippage that's happening, I'm not able to determine the cause of the problem quite yet, but here is a video:

http://vt.tumblr.com/tumblr_mom4tjMZdI1raztym.mp4#_=_

I think the issue may exist somewhere in the firmware code, admittedly I'm quite novice at the programming language behind the firmware but here is the code that I'm currently using on my RAMPS 1.4 board, I've made adjustments according to the Ordbot wiki:

Code: Select all

Any help / advice on how I should adjust the code to get my extruder properly working would be greatly appreciate. I'm so eager to get to printing.

Change this line:

#define DEFAULT_AXIS_STEPS_PER_UNIT {78.7402,78.7402,2560,92.6} // default steps per unit for Ultimaker

92.6 is the theoretical value. Probably you have to adjust the value according to your calibration.
2560 is the value for a M8 x 1.25mm threaded rod.

The link above points to a "3mm Ubis Ceramic Hot End (w/ 0.4mm tip)" but you should use the "1.75mm Ubis Cartridge Hot End (0.4mm tip)" that corresponds to your 1.75mm Extruder.

Thank you for that - changing that line of code has made all the difference for the extruder/hot-end I'm using.

Glad to be able to help.

You should also deactivate the second temp sensor:

#define TEMP_SENSOR_0 1
#define TEMP_SENSOR_1 0
#define TEMP_SENSOR_2 0
