XL ORD Bot?

Postby rickmellor » Tue Jun 25, 2013 7:04 pm

Has anyone tried to build an over-sized ORD Bot? I picked up some 1800mm makerslide from the Inventables sale and now I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. Thinking of going big... perhaps call it the ORD Bot Majoron? :)

This guy made a pretty massive ord-ish bot:

Big Ordbot here

My preliminary design

Extrusions are expensive, I am using vee rails on square aluminum tubes.
Also thinking table is a lot of mass to move around in Y so will move the extruder around.

I propose either ORD Bot Neutron (heaviest component of an atom) or ORD Bot Higgs (heaviest gauge boson) :)

Interesting stuff ... and I'll +1 the name Neutron.

I wonder, how far can the design diverge and still be considered an ORD Bot? Alternatively, does it have to be designed by Bart to be an ORD Bot? These tall bots seem like they're wanting a box frame for rigidity. I'm very drawn to the work that Qu-Bd is doing and I'm thinking that I should attempt my own variant. A few items on my wish list:

1) Multiple extruders. Bare minimum for me is two, but I can see wanting up to four. I've been working on converting my Hadron over to dual extruders.

2) Enclosed, heated build chamber. I'm getting great results with my Helios and Elmer's glue stick over kapton... but it would be nice to be able to control the cooling for the entire print volume.

3) Stationary bed. It's more complex having a dual axis gantry but I need to keep the footprint as tight as possible.

4) Integrated spool holding. We've all figured stuff out for the ORD Bot, but I think a bracket of some sort should be baked into the design.

5) Same goes for the power supply ... should be integrated.

6) Big. I'm thinking 1'x1'x2'. Would we want dual simultaneous extrusion for such a size?

7) Reliable 100 micron layer heights. My Hadron gets a bit fidgety below .2mm ... I'm sure I could improve this performance and will look into it, but while I'm thinking out loud.

There are more things I'd like to do on the software side, but right now I'm just talking mechatronics.

About that name thing again ... does 'ORD' refer to O'Hare airport and the particle names because of the proximity to Fermi Lab?

'Higgs' should be the ultimate ORD Bot ;)

The ORD Bot is named after ORD Camp. Read here.

Once you build one then name it.

Whoever builds it can name it.
Whoever kits it for production can name it

All you wishers --- just design it, develop it, build it

then maybe you can worry about a name?

It was a joke.
Sheesh, what's with the tension...

@rickmellor - the ORD comes from ORD camp, as cvoinescu wrote. Bart named the first one Quantum (because it was tiny). The bigger version got called Hadron. That's all there is to it :)
