ORD Bot Dual Extruder

Postby rickmellor » Fri Aug 23, 2013 5:28 am

Just thought I'd share my progress on the dual extruder conversion I'm in the middle of. This is using two SeeMeCNC EZStruders and two E3D hotends. I'm using the standard MakerSlide carriage and an Azteeg X3 to run it all. I will be widening the printer to recover the X axis travel that was lost ... I've got the extrusions but need to get a new handle part made. Hopefully I'll have it going this weekend.

Here are the mounts if you're interested: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:138425

Looks like the X travel is highly reduced...

Yes it is. I'll be widening the printer in the next step to recover all the X travel.

I am using the QU-DB dual extruder. I was able to get it reliably mounted on the maker slide with out two new drilled and tapped holes. I found that my print area was reduced by about 1.5 inches. I'm still working out the software configuration, but I'm happy so far.

Please be sure to update with some pics of your widened printer and two-tone printed objects!

Glad to hear it's working for you! My goal with this mount was to not require any special holes when using the stock makerslide carriage. I have a new belt attach bracket for the rear but that will require two holes. I've printed it but haven't installed it yet since my temporary rigging seems to be holding for now.

As for widening ... the new spool holder rod came in from McMaster today, the longer belt from sdp-si came in yesterday, I already have the wider base extrusion and makerslide rail (Inventables), and my new handle plates (laser cut by Ponoko) are somewhere between CA and NY... they'll probably be here next week. I'm out of town next week so it'll probably be two weeks before I have photos showing the completion.

For giggles here's a random rendering I made (using j-heads not the e3d's I actually used):

Changed the spool holder to handle two spools. I may lower this a bit but it's working pretty well.

First print. Plenty of calibration to do still, but at least it's working. I need to add more retraction on tool change first, but I'm starting to think that I'll need to add a wiper to this thing. Time will tell, but pretty stoked about this.
