Laser cut of carbon sheet

Postby fma » Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:00 am

Hi!

Is it possible to laser cut a carbon sheet, like those used for quads or so?

Does it require powerfull laser?

Thanks,
Frédéric

If you have a sample, send it to me and I can run a test for you.
I have 100W and 40W system standby for testing

One of my suppliers says he has seen it done on really big lasers of like a 1000 watts. He has been cutting FR4 for me lately, which I previously thought was impossible. It darkens the edge, so he uses black FR4. Most people water jet cut carbon fiber.

What's the standard method for FR4, then, milling? Or waterjet too?

FR4 is usually routed or milled out. We just machined a bunch at work. Smells pretty bad.
