Laser 1.0 Parts Plates

Postby customdev » Thu Oct 24, 2013 1:12 am

Right now I am doing a run of ten complete parts plates for the Laser 1.0.

Read that is for Laser 1.0 and not the 2.X. I take an interest in it because it has a slightly larger build area and does not rely on Makerslide.

Each plate comes with all the custom cutouts for the moving parts of the machine. This includes the XY parts kit, Z lift kit, and the Z lift carriages. I will also throw in a pair of brackets for the gas cylinder assist for the door.

If there is enough demand for the kits I will also do a run for skins and the interface panel. However this will be a separate campaign.

PM me for details or questions. If anyone needs custom work done with respect to laser cutting flat parts from acrylic let me know.

What's the reason to specifically avoid MakerSlide?

You can also build 2.x without Makerslide, using normal Misumi 2040 and V-rails. This is the way it was done pre-Makerslide. I think the dimensions for the other parts would still be the same whether you use Makerslide or Misumi extrusions and V-rails, but of this I'm not sure.

I can confirm that the parts are compatible and interchageable but you need to watch the size of the v-rails. For reference look up Bishop Wisecarver's Dual Vee system. It might look familiar.

Have you thought of making any changes to the parts?

We have a 1.0 + a few mods and have considered redesigning some of the parts to eliminate having to do the edge drilling and tapping. Thought some tabs, captured square nuts with and maybe some bent acrylic could eliminate all of the drilling and tapping.

Bart added a captured square nut to the laser car's (Y axis) adjustment wheel in his second version of the parts where he changed the belt clamping. Same thing might work for the X axis cars and have wondered if Bart looked at it and decided that it wouldn't. Anyway adding slots to the cars and captured nuts to the attaching pieces would make things much easier to assemble.

Our mods consist of flipping the design to move the control panel to the right side, modified the lid to remove lip, moved the motors from the front to the back under the laser tube, added mechanical x axis stops and added Bart's Z axis stabilizers. When I think about it we probably made enough changes to justify a build log or at least a mod log.

We made some of the mods while developing our TI Luminary based cnc controller and a Java application for handling vector and raster files. We are in the process of moving from the Luminary processor to the Beaglebone and this time we're also designing and building a cape for the bone.

The bent acrylic could be a nice touch. It might be quicker to go with the captured nut design similar to what Makerbot did with their cases and add in some finger joints for mechanical rigidity. Any design changes can be executed in short order in AutoCAD.

Myself I have been thinking about the gantry cars and spring tensioning the three v-wheels instead of using a captured nut. Since the acrylic is rigid enough we can turn up the strength of the spring without too much trouble. The self clamping nature of the mechanism would allow for easier assembly.

The parts are officially done if anyone needs a set or two. I will pre-tap all the holes on request.
