Black anodizing / Matte finish etc

Postby FunGizmos » Tue May 24, 2011 5:33 am

Hi,

Getting ready to start a 2.0 build and was thinking about the interior construction materials. Just wondering if it would be worth the extra expense to go go with black anodizing for the frame structure along with a more diffuse panel to help reduce any stray reflections.

Thanks,
Will

Stray reflections are not a huge problem to begin with since if you are cutting the vast majority of the light is being absorbed. Any reflection off the surface being cut will be extremely diffuse. I have not seen nor heard of any laser cutting problems that could be attributed to reflections off the work-piece.

Black or matte finish materials won't necessarily absorb more of the light than any other colour anyway, since mid infra-red is absorbed by almost everything to begin with.

I'd consider black anodized extrusion because it looks cool but its also pretty expensive.

I think you should go for it for the look alone :D. I can order you a special matte black or brushed alum skin for you.

I thought I was being picky when I just ordered:

96765A125 Black-Oxide 18-8 Stainless Steel Flat Washer NO. 10 Screw Size, 7/16" OD, .02"-.04" Thick, packs of 100

so I could avoid using silver washers when fastening the skins...

Thanks for the info! I'm looking forward get started on this project. Have a few other things to wrap up to make room on the bench, but should be rolling soon.

I'll do like the black and hopefully can swing the extra expense.

Just to give people an idea of the difference in cost:
