I also suspect it is possible to attach line lasers by the main tube, much as you would for a drill press, and have the mirrors reproduce the cross at the final focus point. I haven't tried it yet, though.

The beauty of this system is that it can be mounted to the carriage and not have anything to do with the complications derived from aligning the mirrors.

Fairly ingenious.

Any reason this laser could not take the place of two?

Yes, it would not work like these two line lasers work.

The single crosshair laser would have it's center point move in relation to the height of the object it is hitting, unless you are projecting it through the focusing lens, and then it wouldn't look much like a crosshair, but more like a dot when it came out.

The two individual lines will always cross at the same point, regardless of height. It's pretty cool, and way easier to mount and align than an individual crosshair laser.

Dealextreme has the line lasers, too. If you're even remotely interested you should order now: They're cheap, and the shipping is free, but the shipping takes a month or so.

Thanks for the explanation naPS, I completely missed the difference it would make depending on the material height.

I believe the silver one (with the knurled ring at the head) is focusable. That is why the knurled ring is there. I have a couple of similar ones from them and that is the difference.
