Well. It happened.
Black ABS is stupid hard to photograph, and my desk lamp really brings out all the imperfections in the surface. It's a really good motivator for tuning my printer. :D

Whistle, 0.1mm layer height.

The whistle. This one was a bit interesting. The G-Code adds a little blob right inside the mouthpiece, and at fine layer heights it seems to mess with the timing of the filament flowing, resulting in that little hole. In person you pretty much can't see the ripples, and it feels dead smooth.

Link Bracelet, 50% scale, 0.2mm layer height.

The link bracelet at this scale is a really tough print. The one I made at 0.1mm broke because the links were so thin. Still, it looks pretty darn good at 0.2mm.

Jeremy,

I was wondering if you could give this one a try as well

as I think the result is limited by the roughness of the stl: here a comparison image. Left the ring you printed, on the right a smoother variant (as the link above) both shown without smooth-shading

I'm in new york for a few days (and will be visiting makerbot just for kicks), but I will give it a go when I get back. I think the limiting factor is the size at which I was printing it. Those links are really tiny.

you could be right, but still I think that the resolution of the printhead is better than the stl, as I can almost see the triangles back in the print you made :)
The rings on top and bottom in the original stl are much smoother than the links, and also smoother in the print.

I'd be interested to hear the results if Jeremy re-printed with this revised STL. I agree the difference is amazing in the rendering, so I would imagine the print quality improves too.. ??

Well, here it is.
I printed in some red ABS, so it's much easier to see details (and flaws).

The overhangs really kind of sucked. I need to fix that.

The overhangs were harder to print than the original, for some odd reason. I'm re-rendering MakeALot's original file in higher resolution for a print comparison to this one.
Thoughts?

Sorry about that, I just quickly eyeballed the ring and remade it in Rhino, so there are some geometrical differences. Apart from that, I do think it looks smoother. I am unfamiliar with SCAD, so hadn't thought I could rend it in higher resolution.

Did you ever find the right springs for the heated build platform?
