Cutting my own extrusions

Postby Nogginboink » Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:46 pm

Has anyone ordered long stock from Musumi and made their own cuts?

According to Bart's parts list, the custom cut 2020 for the 2.x laser will cost $185.50. If I order five lengths of 2438mm stock (which I believe is 8 foot, over which UPS charges higher shipping fees), Misumi's website says my cost will be $121.90.

I have a metal cutting bandsaw. Is there a fatal flaw in my plan here to save myself $60?

That should work, but I was so impressed with Misumi's quailty and accuracy of cut it is almost worth paying that bit extra to know it is right. I have a metal cutting bandsaw and it doesn't cut very straight.

cut with a miter saw and you should be ok, but I think a band saw has too much flex in the blade to get the cuts as accurate as they need to be.

Misumi's cuts are really precise. Personally, I'd spend the $185 for a machine that has a much better chance of fitting together and aligning to the fraction of a millimeter is has to rather than $120 for machine that might not align.

My thoughts are informed by months of tinkering with a 1m x 1m travel that I've mostly given up trying to align, so maybe for the smaller versions cutting your own might be okay.

I don't actually think you would save anything. I was just looking into ordering a frame package from Misumi and that $185 includes all the corner brackets, insert nuts, and several other hardware items totaling up to more than $60.

Greenvandan, you're right! I added too many rows in my spreadsheet. Springing for the precut pieces is a no-brainer now.
