Favorite Filament Supplier

Have you tried filament from more than one supplier? Have you noticed a difference in print quality?

Who is your favorite supplier based on print quality alone?

So far the best behaved ABS I have used came from MatterHackers. I have also tried Makerbot and Ultimachine.

I've tried different ABS filament suppliers from amazon and the best one I've found is from Octave I have tried most of their colors and I am a big fan, they are very bright after being printed and the quality is very good. Keep in mind I don't print precise items just the pretty ones and I've kept the slicing settings the same for all of them with no changing any settings

I just ordered a bunch from Inventables - both ABS & PLA, price was OK, decent shipping, haven't had a chance to print any of it yet...

I ordered some from Inventables yesterday and it is already delivered (UPS Ground). I have not used it yet, so I did not put it on my previous post.

I've used Makerbot (for ABS), MakerGear (for ABS and PLA), Ultimachine (for PLA) and Protoparadigm (for PLA).

Of all the plastic I've used the only things I dislike are:

  1. Anything not on a spool. I won't buy that way any more. In particular a 5lb bundle of 1.75mm PLA from Ultimachine was mostly wasted due to tangles, despite care in handling it.
  2. The black PLA from Ultimachine was much runnier and harder to work with than other PLA. The best printing PLA I've used so far is silver from Protoparadigm.
Protoparadigm is very close to me so I get quick shipping.

All of the ABS I've used has been much more consistent than the PLA in how it prints.

I think the "best" PLA I've printed has been what we get from Faberdashery - but it's almost $120 per kilo, so stupidly expensive. Second best has been some black from Amazon (Jet) that prints a dream and looks "wet" it's so shiny...

I buy all my 3 mm ABS now from [ur=l]New Image Plastics[/url] because they are cheap (less that $8/lb in 10 lb spools) and the quality is good enough. So far, after over 70 lbs, I've only encountered a short section (about 1 m) in one spool that was irregular and too thick. But sometimes you have to wait long for delivery based on production runs. I've ordered from Ultimachine and Makerbot before that.

BTW: There is a list of suppliers on the wiki. I have been adding to it for a while, so there may be some dead links. It does not include amazon or eBay source.

The 3ders.org has a filament price compare with criteria choice for display.
