Postby Alup » Tue Mar 04, 2014 8:12 am

So after messing with this damn thing for over 6 hours trying to get to stop jamming/making the motor skip this is the result!

Watch video with the sound on

That is a 40mm 10,000 RPM Delta fan out of a server I had.

I gave up with my QU-BD and went for a bog standard Wade Jhead.

Me too, I found the QUBD to be a giant waste of time and money. Good intentions but piss poor execution.

What did you guys/gals end up using instead?

I am going to replace the nozzle on my extruder, My dad thinks that could be the issue. If that does not work then its bye bye QU-BD.

I mentioned in my post which extruder I went for.

I listened to advice on here and other forums and I decided to go for a tried and tested design.

I bought a hotends.com nozzle, 1.75mm/0.4mm size and a Greggs Wade extruder. I had to buy the first one. I now print my own and I have since converted it to a Bowden setup. I just do ABS now and it is fine at 235 deg C.

I went with a Wades Reloaded. I actually tried using the stepper that QUBD provided, but it ran very hot and actually melted my first Wades Reloaded.... not sure why, it was wired exactly the same as my previous steppers.

I second the vote for the J-head hotends from Brian at hotends.com, they are quality hotends that work. On the cold end, I use a modified minimalist extruder (Using a screw and rubber instead of a spring). The only parts I use from the two QU-BD extruders I bought are the stepper motors and the fans.

I drilled out the barrel and inserted a ptfe tube on my QU-BD. I even machined my own stainless barrels. It finally got bent when the hotend touched the bed. The metal was very thin. I gave up at that stage. Wasted so much time. Also having a single screw to grip the filament is cheap and nasty. Load of junk imho. The Wade has spring tensioner screws. There are also lots of variations and it is possible to build one using the best design features of each.

I agree, the machining on the Hotends.com jheads is first class. Brian must have a CNC lathe I suspect. They are a work of art.

I am pretty sure that the problem with the QU-BD extruder is the QU-BD extruder.
