RAMPS 1.4 Disconnect w/ 12V Source

Postby rsm5178 » Fri May 02, 2014 10:22 pm

My RAMPS 1.4 will disconnect from my computer when I connect a 12V power source

When I have my RAMPS 1.4/Mega board connected to my computer via USB, the connection is fine. Repetier Host will recognize the printer. When I connect the 12V power source the RAMPS board disconnects from the computer. It appears that the USB power source is over ridden by the 12V source?

Any ideas?

I found this out when I was trying to PID tune my extruder heater.

I am able to control my motors with only the LCD controller and the power source.

My setup:

Sainsmart kit that you see on ebay with the Mega board, RAMPS 1.4, heated plate, end stops, stepper motors, and the large LCD controller (RepRap Discount Smart LCD Controller equivalent)

Power source: 12-16V laptop power pack. 6.6A max

Marlin firmware

I don't think 6.6amps is going to make it with the heated bed.

Yes, you need at least 16A with the heated bed!

I don't have the bed wired in. Only using the 5V input for now.

12.3 volts into RAMPs and 12V out under load of the hot end.

I tried pronterface over repetier host and I was able to get the hot end to 200 degrees during PID tuning. Repetier host only gets to 100 degrees before losing connection.

Tried using sprinter instead of marlin. I experience the same issue.

Think that the voltage is good for the power supply. I ordered an ATX since I'll need it anyway for the bed.

Tried connecting with and without motor drivers.

Leading me to think I have a hardware issue somewhere. The mega board works fine standing alone. All solder points look ok on RAMPS

What are the chances the issue is the Mega board and not the RAMPS?

Still waiting on the ATX power supply to test to see if that is the issue.

Is it a real Arduino, or a chinese clone? When I see the solderings of some chinese stuffs (not all), I'm often suprised it works!

Sainsmart clone. Soldering looks ok. Nothing noticeable is bridging to other pins/connectors.

The computer will recognize the board as a COM port and Arduino IDE uploads fine. Only tried the blink LED test

Don't remember how it is done on RAMPS, but try to totally separate 5V from USB and 5V coming from Arduino regulator. So, Arduino will only be powered up from USB. You may have to remove a diode/jumper or both...

Found the fix.... Use an actual USB outlet and not an eSATAp (SATA and USB) port.

This fix was also done without the smart controller LCD attached. Almost certain after reading the eSATAp wiki page that the low power 5v drive was the issue.
