Maximum cut area

Postby dwessels » Mon Jan 23, 2012 10:01 pm

All,

I was wondering what the maximum cut area that people were able to get out of the 2.x was?
It looks like I am around 530mm x 280 mm (20"x12").

I wanted to cut out one of the ultimaker frames, but I need to be able to cut an area of about 15"x15", so I can't get it to fit in the 2.x

Does anyone have any ideas / thoughts, or am I just out of luck.

Thanks

you could always use locating pins and do a 2 part cut? or design a joint to join to parts together that fit in your cut area.

Well it is a DIY project. There is nothing from preventing you from sizing the machine to suit your needs. (The MakerSlide rails can be ordered in other lengths.) I will probably need a bit longer than 20" myself (around 22") so I plan on simply modifying the dimensions slightly.

EDIT: Not sure if I was correct with this statement. I PM'd Bart about ordering custom lengths in the mechatronics kit, and he replied that he would rather not do custom orders in order to keep the price down. I thought that I saw MakerSlide material elsewhere on the web where you could order custom lengths, but perhaps I am mistaken. Anyone else comment on this?

2nd EDIT: Found it! Custom order lengths at store.makerslide.com.

I extended by 2.x laser to a 24 1/2" x 18 1/2" cutting area. I have skin drawings and misumi extrusion BOM changes that I'd gladly share. Note that my laser was make pre MakerSlide so a little tweaking will be necessary.

Thanks Brian,

That seems like a good cut area. A copy of your BOM would be great.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
What I may end up doing is building another laser, scaled up larger with a stronger laser a well (around 80w).

I would definitely be interested in this list! This is what made me sign up for this forum in the first place.
