mechanical end stop resetting 3d printer?

Postby Panopticon » Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:52 pm

For some reason, one of my end stops when activated restarts my 3d printer or vice-versa, if it's activated my ramps board is booted and the smart LCD comes on, if a released the switch on the end-stop it turns off. Any ideas? I have the end stop mounted to the makerslide with a screw and a nut behind it locking it in place. :?:

Restarts? You mean reboots it? Could it be a short?

You can use M119 to check the status of the switches.
You should get something like this:

Home Position:
Code: Select all
< 17:32:00: Reporting endstop status
< 17:32:00: x_min: TRIGGERED
< 17:32:00: x_max: TRIGGERED
< 17:32:00: y_min: TRIGGERED
< 17:32:00: y_max: TRIGGERED
< 17:32:00: z_min: TRIGGERED
< 17:32:00: z_max: TRIGGERED

Non Home Position:
Code: Select all
< 17:33:03: Reporting endstop status
< 17:33:03: x_min: open
< 17:33:03: x_max: TRIGGERED
< 17:33:03: y_min: open
< 17:33:03: y_max: TRIGGERED
< 17:33:03: z_min: open
< 17:33:03: z_max: TRIGGERED

Not sure if related since I don't have a RAMPS, but throwing it out there just in case. On the Azteeg X3 there are three pins each for the min/max limits. The two wires, as noted in the docs, for the limit switch act like you'd expect. You can run a normal latch sequence off the switch when connected to these pins. Out of curiosity I connected the other pin to my switch and when that was triggered my X3 would go into reset and be held there until I released it. I'm considering using this as an e-stop at some point. Sounds similar to your issue.

Yes, the RAMPS 1.4 board + LCD screen reboots, the firmware is still intact.

If it's shorting, I wonder if the metal from the screw/nut is causing the issue? If I even just barely move the cable the end-stop is connected to the machine reboot.

Touch a real ground to prevent ESD, then try touching the RAMPS all over with your fingers. If it reboots you might have a floating reset circuit.

Something to note: It was a short cause by the nut touching the back 3 pins that connect to the wire of the end stop. I took out the nut and replaced it with one of those rectangular metal tabs that are used in the makerslide channels, seems to be working okay now. ;)
