Adhesive film to reduce smoke staining

Postby dirktheeng » Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:03 pm

All,

I want to make some x-mass gifts with the laser this year and I want to cut them from some woods, but I also want to reduce my cleanup time. I was thinking about using some adhesive backed paper or really wide masking tape to cover the parts b/4 cutting them. That way any smoke stains will be reduced/eliminated. Has anybody done this already? If so, what do you use and where do you get it?

Some places sell a paper masking material, like laserbits.com. I have never used it.

I haven't tried it yet, but application tape that is used to make vinyl signs might work. Application or transfer tape is like really wide masking tape. It is available from sign supply companies and sign shops and comes in various types and sizes. I usually order a full three or four foot wide roll and have them slit it into several assorted widths.

Another thing you might try is spray glue. Some will give a temporary bond when light coat is sprayed on paper.

I tried the Avery white sign mask. It made a sticky dirty mess. It is probably a lot thicker than it needs to be. Many are also vinyl so they give off chlorine when lasered.

I found that pre finishing your wood reduces smoke staining. After cutting you can wipe off the residue.

I wrote a mail to Ponoko and asked them what paper they were using.

They answered almost instantly. +1 for the support.

Turns out its a product called TransferRite

Does Ponoko put that on after cutting? They put something on to keep the parts from falling out as I recall.

Here's a good source ($ seem to be reasonable) for that. I haven't ordered from them yet, but have been planning to.
