Makerslide DLP-based Resin 3D Printer

Postby Enraged » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:51 pm

Has anyone considered building one? There is a post on http://blog.reprap.org/ regarding it, but Bucktown Polymers is now selling UV curable resin for $40/quart, which is pretty close to the cost of PLA filament by volume. The lemoncurry project (http://code.google.com/p/lemoncurry/wiki/main) has more details about an open source design.

So is this the next step in 3D printer technology? What are peoples thoughts on building a Makerslide version?

A few ideas I had:
-use a low volume resin container, fed automatically by a pet feeder/water dispenser like this: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Healthy-S ... 435&sr=8-1
-build an enclosure of UV filtering acrylic, so the resin doesn't harden from other light sources: http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=414

I've been thinking along the same lines as you, and have started reading up on the work done by other people, the chemistry, etc. The main things that have held me back so far is the number of other projects that I have started but not yet completed, and the fact that I have a day job that consumes an inordinate amount of time.

I'm building an ORDbot and a Shapeoko, so I figured why not look at building another machine :)

I'm curious to see if one of the new pico projectors would have the right light wavelength output. They are very small (they will fit in a pocket) and have an image size of 6" to 60".

A Makerslide based Resin 3D Printer has the same issue that any machine using Makerslide for the Z-axis would have: The platform drops into the vat if you lose(or have to cut) power. I think this is the only axis that moves in a DLP 3D printer.

That would be great if it worked, but sadly the pocket projectors are LED based, with maybe a few laser diode based ones out there, and the wavelengths, at least for the UV resin wouldn't be there. They use DLP with mercury / metal halide lamps because once the UV filter in the projector is pulled they have lots of UV. Somewhere there's a graph of the amount of UV possible, and it's equivalent to outside (Sun Light), which is what's needed to get the quick ~1 second cure time.

Also the pocket projectors are usually resolution challenged, which would limit your build envelope for highly detailed builds.

You can get Lumex LEDs that are designed for the 385nm wavelength, maybe swap them into a projector?

The intensity of the light is proportional to the time the resin needs to harden. A pico projector would be almost useless. With the price of 1080p projectors at costco and the like, it is not that expensive. Though I would go for a data projector with something like a 1600x1200 res.

I agree that DLP 3d printers have a lot of potential in terms of resolution and surface finish.

The extrusion based printers always seem to have limitations in terms of surface finish and detail.
