Setting z zero for a print.

Where do yo set the initial z zero for a print. Do you set it right at the glass and the software compensates for the first row or do you set it up off the glass a partial layer and it starts there?

Most people use a piece of regular weight printer paper as a gauge. You want that to just start to have a little resistance at zero between the bed and the extruder tip.

If the tip is too high the first layer will not stick. You want that first layer to get a little flattened by thee nozzle. If the tip is too low it can be blocked by the bed and not flow.

Software - unless you specifically tell it to - does not compensate - zero is zero. I set mine using a feeler gauge, but a piece of paper is probably just as easy, and more often at hand. ;-)
