Make your own filament extruder

I'm not a 3D Printer person, but am always interested in what others are doing. Today, I noticed an article about an 83 year old gentleman who designed a $250 filament extruder, which means he can make his own filament to use on his 3D printer. Did I mention he won $40,000 for the invention. Oh, and did I mention he has make it all available to the world if anyone else wants to build their own.
