Filament Spool Carrier Contest

Postby bdring » Mon Mar 12, 2012 12:28 am

Here is the filament spool carrier carrier I am using. It is made from Misumi 20x20 extrusion and a few Misumi brackets. For the central shaft I pressed two 5mm bearings into each end of a piece of electrical conduit (perfect tight fit). There is a piece of 5mm threaded rod down the center. It works great and is almost frictionless. I have two problems with it. First, the design aesthetic is not ORD quality and switching spools is tricky.

spooler.jpg

I tried running the spool on V wheels, but the spool wall width is too wide to reliably run on those V's. Smooth idlers would probably work, but might ride a little sloppy in the very wide belt area.

Here is the Contest. Design one that best fits these criteria and win $120 credit at the MakerSlide store (can be applied to ORD Bot).

Here are the criteria I will look at. You do not need to meet all of them if other factors make up for it.

  • Compliments the look of the ORD Bot
  • Uses ORD Bot Parts or has simple BOM
  • Minimal Fabrication required (some printed parts OK)
  • Easy Spool change
  • Fits multiple standard spool types.
  • Easily Portable (not attached (at least permanently) to ORD bot)
  • Must be open source.

Feel free to post early looks. If other people help out, I will award the prize to the first person to post the idea or contributed most to the design. This contest is mostly for fun and to come out with a usable design. If you are going to get all crabby and nitpicky if you don't win, please don't participate. The contest will end 3/21/2012.

I don't have one. This was hillbilly engineered, with my daughter's (11) help.

FYI: There are foamy pads underneath. I was hoping for ORD feet, but the dual row of holes looked bad.

Here's mine. I decided to build it into the footprint of the Hadron, that way it doesn't take up additional desk space. Another benefit of building it into the base of the Hadron is that is will add mass to help dampen vibrations at higher print speeds. As an alternate, you could add a few extrusions and have it sit beside or under the Hadron. I tried to reuse stock ORDbot parts, or stock Misumi parts. There is clearance for both size of spool that Bart posted.

The only new parts are a flat bearing block that could be routered or printed, that mounts to 2040 or makerslide with 4 bolts; a new 2020 sized foot with the same bolt spacing as the 2040 ORDbot foot; threaded rod and nuts to mount the spool. Alternately, you could use a drill rod the same ID as the bearings, and use a shaft collar on one end, and a quick release pin on the other.

Basic BOM:

reused parts:
1x ORDbot foot

stock parts:
2x Misumi 2040 350mm
1x Misumi 2040 420mm
1x Misumi 2040 190mm
2x Misumi 2020 350mm
1x Misumi 2020 290mm
3x HBLSD5 40mm wide corner bracket
4x HBLSS5 20mm wide corner bracket
1x HSC5 2040 end cap
1x ORDbot foot
about 36x 5mm bolts and preassembly nuts to bolt everything together

new parts:
2x 2040 bearing plate with bearings
2x 2020 foot
1x threaded rod to match bearing ID (8mm or similar)
2x nuts to lock threaded rod in place

standalone (if you don't want to mount it to the Hadron)
1x Misumi 2020 290mm
1x Misumi 2040 420mm

This was a quick modeling job, so if you want more dimensions, etc I will go back and optimize it. This was actually a fun exercise, thanks Bart!

I like Bart's idea of pressing bearings into electrical conduit, so I based my idea off that.

I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. The only ORD bot parts are the bearings.

The aluminum extrusion should prevent the spools from falling off the rollers. You could also print bumpers or add a bracket to help with this. I picture the filament passing under a roller before going to the printer, which should keep it more stable if your spool is running low (and light). Easily portable since it is so small when there's no spool on it as well. You could also print little guide collars to go on the conduit and keep the spool in the same spot.

Parts:
2X Misumi HFS5-2020-108 ($3.03 ea)
2X Misumi HFS5-2020-230 ($3.03 ea)
4X Misumi HBLFSN5 ($0.75 ea)
4X Misumi HBLSS5 ($1.02 ea)

M5 threaded rod (~$6.25 for 1M) (Hardware Store)
4X M5 Acorn Nuts (~$1) (Hardware Store)
Electrical Conduit (~$3 for a half chunk) (Hardware Store)

4X 5mm x 16mm x 5mm Ball Bearing ($1 ea) (Makerslide store)

Total ~$28

*EDIT*
Also requires 12 M5X8mm screws and 12X T-slot nuts

Here's a simple spool holder with a couple distinct features:

  • On each side of the spool is a cone that centers the spool on a threaded rod.
  • On each side of the rod is half of a free-angle bracket from Misumi.

The cone has a space for press-in bearings on each side (like the Dual bearing V-wheels), and the threaded rod allows for nuts to keep everything pressed together snug.

The free-angle bracket allows the spool to be lifted out without undoing anything. If desired, you could put a retaining pin in through the holes the in angle bracket.

Also, using T-slots means that feet, filament guides, etc. can be added pretty much anywhere.

BOM:
(4x) 9" 20x40 Aluminum Extrusion
(2x) 6" 20x40 Aluminum Extrusion
(6x) HBLFSN5 Corner Brackets
(2x) HBLSD5 Corner Brackets
(1x) M5 x 1m Threaded Rod (McMaster P/N# 99067A242, only about 9-10" needed)
(1x) Free Angle Bracket
Misc nuts and bolts

Here is my submission:

example.jpg

Spool on the carrier.

filament_spooler.jpg

Shown upside down to see the screw as feet. The t-slot nuts and M5 nuts are shown as extra parts.

Minimum Setup (Requires extrusion be elevated such as printed feet OR have the MakerSlide upside down!):

MakerSlide or other 2040 extrusion 100 mm length minimum x 1
HNKK5-5 5mm thread t-slot nut x 4
Smooth Idler Wheel Kit x 4
M5 nut x 8
M5 screw (50mm shown) x 4

Shown Setup (shown in pictures with screws to elevate extrusion):

MakerSlide or other 2040 extrusion - 100 mm length minimum x 1
HNKK5-5 5mm thread t-slot nut x 8
Smooth Idler Wheel Kit x 4
M5 nut x 8
M5 screw (50mm shown) x 4
M5 cap screw (10mm shown) x 4

What I like about this setup is most of the parts can be sourced at the MakerSlide store such as the idler wheel kit, t-slot nut, and extrusion. The screws and nuts can be found at your local hardware store. The idler wheel are installed so you can pull them out. The idea is spool will keep the wheels from coming loose and the wheels will not touch the extrusion when installed this way.

Compliments the look of the ORD Bot by using 2040 extrusion (MakerSlide or Misumi, etc...)
Uses ORD Bot Parts or has simple BOM as listed.
Minimal Fabrication required (some printed parts OK) such as new feet to elevate the extrusion.
Easy Spool change since you are not required to stick something in the middle of the spool.
Fits multiple standard spool types by having longer screws.
Easily Portable (not attached (at least permanently) to ORD bot) because it is small and can be mated with other parts of the printer's extrusion.
    It is Open Source.

Hope you folks like it! :)

Updated/Revision

Felt like the screw could be easily loosen, I have added an additional nut and washer to give it a tighter lock.

Revised Setup (shown in pictures with additional nut and washer):

MakerSlide or other 2040 extrusion - 100 mm length minimum x 1
HNKK5-5 5mm thread t-slot nut x 8
Smooth Idler Wheel Kit x 4
M5 nut x 12
Size #10 washer x 4
M5 screw (50mm shown) x 4
M5 cap screw (10mm shown) x 4
